Highland Park is the small town south of University Park, under three miles from our office by Preston Road and Beverly Drive. The Town covers 2.26 square miles with about 8,900 residents, and twenty percent of the original land was set aside for parks, so green space is part of nearly every block. Preston Road follows an old trail that the Republic of Texas surveyed in 1838, and the Town says Highland Park Village, built in 1931, was the first shopping center of its kind in the country.
The town was platted in sections between 1909 and 1924, starting with the lots between Armstrong, Abbott and Gillon Avenues and Hackberry Creek, with additions west of Preston Road in 1915 and 1917. In houses from those years we often find detached rear garages or old carriage-house bays with narrow openings, low ceilings and framing that was never meant for a modern opener, so we reach for low-headroom track, wall-mounted openers and springs sized by hand.
The Town also has rules of its own. Its building inspection page lists repairs and remodeling among the work that needs a permit, holds the property owner responsible for confirming one is in place, and limits construction to Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
