North Dallas is a broad name, and on this page it means the northwest side: Midway Hollow, Walnut Hill and Chapel Downs west of Midway Road, plus Bluffview, Devonshire and Briarwood just south of Northwest Highway, toward Love Field. Depending on the street, the drive from our office is three to four and a half miles, by Northwest Highway and Midway Road or by the Dallas North Tollway and Walnut Hill Lane.
Midway Hollow shows the pattern best. It holds about 2,600 single-family homes between Walnut Hill Lane, Northwest Highway, Midway Road and Marsh Lane, and it grew from a set of 1945 bungalows into a neighborhood of brick cottages and ranches with attached one-car garages. Since the 2000s many of those houses have been replaced by larger two-story homes, which usually means wider garages, so one street can hold a 1950s door beside a new one. Bluffview sits on hills above Bachman Branch, where some cliffs rise 50 feet over the water, so we expect sloped drives on the steeper lots. Bluffview itself began in 1924 as one-acre lots cut from a dairy farm.
The 2019 tornado began its Dallas damage near I-35E and Walnut Hill, and the National Weather Service survey photographed damage on Coppedge Lane.
