A garage door that has come off its track is unstable and should not be run, lifted or lowered. The door is a heavy panel carried on rollers, and once a roller leaves the channel the weight can twist the sections, bend the track and drop the door without warning. Leave the opener unplugged, keep people and vehicles clear of the opening, and call.

A roller leaves the track for a reason: a vehicle bump, a bent or loose track, a worn roller, a cable that lost tension or a spring that failed. We secure the door first, then find that reason, because putting the roller back without fixing the cause means the door derails again. We reseat the rollers, straighten or replace the damaged track, replace worn rollers or cables, and rebalance the door before the opener is reconnected.

How to Tell a Door Is Off Track

  • One side of the door hangs lower and looks crooked
  • A roller is out of the track and sitting beside it
  • The door stuck halfway and will not move either way

Storms and settling are the usual causes in North Texas. A strong gust against an open door can push rollers out of the track, and the National Weather Service says damaging wind arrives nearly every year. A clay slab that moves can also shift the jamb until the track no longer lines up with the rollers. The National Weather Service rated the October 20, 2019 tornado that crossed the northern part of Dallas County EF3, with winds near 140 mph, and since then we look for a racked door and a bent track on every storm call.

Is a garage door off track dangerous?
Yes. A derailed door can fall or twist, and its weight sits on only part of the hardware. Do not try to lift it, lower it or run the opener, and keep children and vehicles away. A trained technician should secure it first.
Can I fix a garage door that is off track myself?
We advise against it. Putting a roller back looks simple, but it is safe only when the track is straight and the spring and cables are sound, and you rarely know that until the door is stabilized. DASMA says repairs to springs, cables and brackets belong to a trained technician.
Why does my garage door keep coming off track?
A door that keeps derailing has an uncorrected cause: a bent or misaligned track, a worn roller, a spring that no longer balances the door, or an opening that has moved. We fix the cause rather than reseating the roller again.
What should I do when my garage door comes off the track on one side?
Unplug the opener, leave the door where it is and call. If the door is down, leave it closed. If it hangs partly open, stay out from under it. We secure the door, reseat the rollers and replace whatever is bent or worn.
